There won’t be a particularly big Star Wars presence at San Diego Comic-Con later this month, but there is this awesome Legacy poster for the franchise which will be available at the event, courtesy of Lucasfilm. Seen below, it brings together the three generations of the saga, encompassing the stars of the Prequel Trilogy, the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy.
The placement of the characters draws close comparisons between the different eras. You have the tragic anti-hero as the largest figure at the back (Anakin Skywalker, Darth Vader and Kylo Ren), the kickass leading ladies (Padme Amidala, Princess Leia and Rey) taking charge at the front, and then the male leads/mentors (Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Luke, Han Solo, older Luke and Leia) and the beloved comic relief character (R2-D2, Yoda and BB-8).
The “legacy” that the poster seems to be focusing on, then, is the history of the Skywalker family. Anakin’s fall to the dark side, the heroism of his children Luke and Leia, the corruption of Vader’s grandson Ben Solo and Rey’s rise as the new champion of the light side of the Force, as mentored by Luke and Leia. There are some curious omissions, however, including C-3PO, Lando Calrissian, Poe Dameron and Finn.
Not counting the Anthology films like Rogue One and Solo, Episode IX will likely be the first mainline Star Wars movie not to have one of the first two generations of Skywalkers in it. As Luke died in The Last Jedi and Carrie Fisher sadly passed away in 2016, the closer to the current trilogy will really be about exploring the legacy of the dynasty as the family successors’ Rey and Kylo battle it out for control of the galaxy. And we’ll find out how that goes down when the pic lands in theaters on December 20th, 2019.
